If I was “nearly wiped out” after building the box in Part 4, I am completely obliterated after filling it with soil! To say I am “sore” today would be an understatement…
I was up at the crack of dawn. Okay, it wasn’t exactly the crack of dawn ( it was 6 a.m.), but the point is… early for me, and I had been up late the night before writing Part 5. 😉 Anyway, you know how when you are having something delivered they always give you this huge window of time that they say it’ll come between? Well, they said it would be there before noon, but they open at 8, so I needed to get over to my mom’s early so I could spread the tarp out over her driveway just in case they came first thing. They didn’t. I was up early for no reason. But better safe than sorry, right? They showed up at around 11:30.
To amuse myself in meantime, among other things…I sat out on the tarp in the middle of the driveway. Wonder what the neighbors thought?

When it finally arrived, it looked like so much more than I thought was going to be needed to fill the box. And as it turns out… it was, but I’ll tell you about that in a bit.
The dastardly pile that completely obliterated me…
You can’t see me anymore because I’m buried beneath it. Yeah… not really, but it sure felt like it. 😉

My daughter snapped this as I shoveled up the first of what would turn out to be many, many, many scoops…
~
It took 38 deathly loads in my lil’ red wheelbarrow. My mom counted! 🙂
~
Should have asked my mom to count how many shovel fulls too. That would have been interesting to know! Here’s the very first dump…
~
Are you a glass half full or half empty kind of person? I am a half full, and was feeling relief and agony at this point. Relief at being nearly halfway done and agony at the thought of how much more suffering was still ahead…
~
DONE! Nuff said. 🙂
It took approximately 2 1/2 grueling hours to fill up this baby! Still looks sorta like a grave to me, but I’m sure once the happy, green, growing things start, it’ll look more like a garden!

Despite my use of all the negative adjectives here (and the extreme pain I am in today), I actually really enjoyed this. My daughter shared the burden, and together we conquered the “vile pile” of soil! My sis popped over when she got off work and lent a hand, and afterward my mom made yummy BLT’s for supper. *DROOLS* We all had fun taking bets about how many more wheelbarrow loads it would be as the box got filled. By the way… my sis and I won! Great minds think alike! 🙂
As I mentioned earlier, there was more dirt than needed. But again… better to be safe than sorry, and to have more than not enough right? Although that meant more work ~ to the tune of 12 more back breaking loads in my lil’ red wheelbarrow. We set it aside on another tarp (to get it out of the middle of the driveway) and are waiting to see about using it elsewhere in my mom’s yard, but I think the remainder of that soil will most likely end up in my sis’s gardens up at her cabin. I’m all about sharing/spreading the love. Or in this case ~ the dirt. 🙂
Hey, you guys know what this means now…? As soon as I spend some time contemplating which, where, when, and how ~ I can start PLANTING!
