Remember all that rain I mentioned in Rain Much? that we had in the forecast? Well, we ended up having tornadoes one day and SNOW the next! Crazy huh? Only in Minnesota…
It wasn’t raining or snowing or tornado-ing today, so I got out there and planted my zucchini, carrots, and lettuce!

I planted 3 happy rows of carrots. 🙂
~
And then made 5 little mounds for my zucchini. With all the rain we’ve had it felt more like making mud pies with how wet the soil was. 😉
~
I did end up deciding to plant my lettuce underneath the cucumber trellis and planted 8 of them.
~
Once again I had the scent of my mom’s lilacs keeping me company while I was gardening. Ohmygosh they just smell so unbelievably lovely! I could smell them the instant I pulled into her driveway. Have I mentioned how much I utterly adore them?! ♥

My mom’s cat was spying on me through the window the entire time. Sorry Gus, I didn’t plant any catnip for ya. 😉

I looked for signs of life from the broccoli, spinach, and peas I planted last week, but didn’t really expect to see any yet since they have anywhere from 5 -14 days listed on the seed packets for their “days to emerge.” I can’t wait until the little green lifes start poking up through the dirt!

Lilacs make for fragrant memories. They remind me of my grandmother.

That is what I was thinking too. About my grandmother. Every summer growing up we spent summers at my Mom’s parents and there were two of the most beautiful full lilac bushes (trees from my childs point of view) that I woke up to every morning all summer long. I smile even now as the memory scent fills my mind. Thank you for bringing that happy and joyful thought to me on a regular basis Jewels.

My mom’s lilac bush is more of a tree too so unfortunately all the lilas are at the top beyond my reach. I would love to clip some and bring them inside to enjoy. At my old house I had 4 different varieties of lilacs that all bloomed profusely. I would cut some and put them on the porch, on the kitchen table, and on my bedside table. I love them so much ~ wish their blooming time lasted longer.

Lilacs are an unmistakable whiff of spring. Growing up in the “high plains” (Nebraska and SE Colorado), we had big, blousy lilac bushes and it was one of the few blooms my mom would cut and bring in the house. It will always remain a favorite scent of mine. Happily, I now have four lilac shrubs – 3 we “inherited” when we moved in last year and one I brought with me from our old garden.

Indeed they are, and such a heavenly whiff! A favorite scent of mine as well! I’m in an apartment now, so I no longer have any lilacs of my own ~ gotta get my fix at my mom’s while working in the little raised vegetable garden she let me build in her yard. Are yours blooming now where you are?

They were blooming a week ago, but pretty sparsely. The previous owners planted a common lilac up next to our house (eastern exposure) where it stays in shade most of the day. I had already planned to uproot it and move it to a sunnier spot as soon as it bloomed. We got a couple nights of freezing temps last week, which concluded the blooms, so I need to set a moving date. One of the other lilacs is in a too-boggy spot (they don’t like wet feet); fortunately, it’s small so it’s also due for a relo sometime in the next week or two. The third one that was here is a different variety, and it’s squeezed in among some roses but at least it’s got a western exposure. I am considering removing at least one of the roses near it – probably next year – which should help it bloom better. The ‘Miss Kim’ I brought with me is the only one that’s in a decent, sunny location. But she’s gonna take a year or two to feel completely settled in and ready to bloom her head off.

Lucky for those lilacs that you moved in and can rescue them from an untimely demise from the poor planning by the previous owners. 😉 There are tons of lilacs everywhere around the area where I live (mostly the old fashioned/common type ~ which are my favorite :)) and they are just starting to peak. It’s so wonderful ~ you can smell them driving down almost any road!
