Adventures in Gardening Part 17 ~ Trouble in Paradise

I guess the road I’m traveling on in these new gardening adventures is going to be paved with a few stumbling blocks along the way, because these city thugs, er I mean bugs, aren’t taking kindly to a country gardener trying to grow things on their turf.

Honestly, like I said before, in 20 years of gardening I’ve never had pest problems.  Why now?  Here my mom opens up her yard to me, giving me a little piece of my long lost paradise so I can get my gardening fix, and the stupid bugs have to come along and cause trouble.  How aggravating!

I’m afraid my spinach is becoming a lost cause.  This doesn’t exactly look appetizing to me…~

And now I see something has also poked holes in my cucumbers too.  😦~

Look at this big chomp something took out of one of my bean plants…~

The leaf miners are continuing to make their ugly designs in my broccoli.~

And now I’ve noticed one of my lettuces looks it has a leaf that is a bit puckered up.  And not for a kiss…~

Something has removed all but one main leaf of this poor zucchini, and my other zucchini plants aren’t looking all that great either.~

Thankfully I have this one zucchini that seems to be doing okay, but I’m not sure what the story is with the speckled looking stuff on that leaf on the left… ~

It’s so upsetting to have my precious yummy veggies getting all chewed up and destroyed by pests, but I’m going to keep at it with the garlic/pepper spray in between all this rain and keep hoping for the best.

On a positive note…

My carrots are finally starting to get a little bigger, but still so small that I can’t seem to capture a clear focused shot of them.   They sure have been slow growing.  ~

My peas are getting taller every day!  They are being a bit willful at training them to go evenly up the trellis which messes with my need for orderliness, but at this point with all of the issues going on with my other plants ~as long as they stay healthy… I’ll be happy!  🙂~

There are 4 little strawberries forming on my strawberry plant.  I can’t wait to eat them!~

While out running around with my sis the other day I picked up this cute little snail planter.  He was just begging me to give him a new home.  😉  So I stuffed him with some Lobelia and set him on the grass next to my garden.  He looks pretty content there don’t ya think?~

Oh and feast your eyes on these beauties!  My mom’s peonies are in full bloom right now, so to try and focus on something positive after seeing the destruction in my garden, I spent a great deal of time enjoying these and trying to get just the perfect shot of them in all their glory.  What do you think, did I succeed?~~~

  1. Oh no! I wonder what is eating them? So the cayenne isn’t working We’ve been okay so far. (Crossing fingers)

    • I have no idea what’s eating them. Other than that little caterpillar (who met with an untimely demise under my shoe) that I found on that first day I noticed damage, I can’t visibly see anything ~ only their destruction. 😦 I’m not sure whether or not the cayenne is working because we’ve had some rain. I’m totally bummed. It sure knocks the wind out of my gardening sails. But I’m gonna keep trying and hoping for the best…

  2. 😦 I can relate garden wise. My poor mini gardeners are going to come home today to a very sad looking and depressed sight to say the very least. My vinegar trick did not work this year as I have now been over run by some sort of Awesome Veggie eating Beetle. I nearly cried. My veggies look just like yours… Like Twinkie Veggies. Which at any other time would be a really cool concept but not in this case. When you come up with the solution, I am all ears. On the positive side, I have to agree, your flowers are looking AMAZING!!! They do indeed lift the spirits and I love love love the cute snail. Which is the perfect one for the garden. 😉

    • Oh sad. 😦 I’m so sorry to hear that your garden goodies are suffering as well. Hope the mini gardeners aren’t too disappointed when they see. Bless their sweet little hearts. ♥

    • Sorry to hear that. 😦 I guess I could live without growing my own spinach (although I’ve always been able to before), but I definitely can’t live without growing zucchini or cucumbers! So I hope I can figure out something…

It’s hard for me to rinse spinach when it just has dirt on & the buggies really are a pain. I buy baby spinach leaves already washed & bagged for salads & pastas. We have some yellow squash growing but no zucchini or cukes. Not enough room here for them.

    • I like the bagged pre-washed baby spinach too, but I do prefer it fresh out of the garden when possible. One year we had such a wonderful bountiful harvest of spinach I froze and dehydrated a bunch and used it later in soups and all sorts of other ways ~ it was yummy! I’ve never grown yellow squash, isn’t it sort of like zucchini?

Sort of but not as good in my opinion~they are great grilled & sliced in salads or you can saute’ & put over pasta. I just think zucchini has a better taste but I take what I can get~lol

  6. Nice work capturing the vibrant colors and texture of the peonies, and incorporating the light into your shots.

    • Thanks so much! I love taking floral photos! When I had flower gardens of my own I used to enjoy strolling around them and taking pictures. None of them were really anything to brag about, but there were a couple of times where I managed to capture a butterfly and a bee sampling my flowers. Those turned out pretty snazzy if I do say so myself. Take a look at them if you’d like to they’re in my deviantART gallery… http://jewels4665.deviantart.com/gallery/#/d4tee6s and http://jewels4665.deviantart.com/gallery/#/d4oval3 🙂 I wish I had a nicer camera though. I used my daughter’s camera for these peonies which seems to be slightly better than my own at taking close-ups. 🙂

  7. I know who is eating your plants…Jim Carrey!

Great shots of the flowers, by the way. You don’t need Photoshop when you can take pictures that good!

    • Omygosh Simon, Jim Carrey hahahaha! Oh thanks, none of these photos are edited ~ Rachael’s camera takes great close-ups! She has several really great photo editing programs that she uses for her stuff though, and if she had edited these for me, they would have looked professional. Thanks for making me laugh today! 😀
