Cardinal Song

Such a welcome song after a winter so long

with color so bright against the bleak winter’s light.

I know these photos aren’t anything to brag about, but I have been trying to catch a shot of this little fella for quite some time.  I’ve been hearing his warning/alarm chirp sounds coming from the bush under my bedroom window all winter long, and then the other day I finally heard him singing.  He was up amidst the very top branches, so my rinky dink camera had to use all of its zoom-in powers that it could muster, which wasn’t much, but I still feel triumphant to have captured a shot at all, especially from in between all the tree branches.

Although we have cardinals all year round in Minnesota, they usually don’t start singing until spring is approaching.  Looking outside right now at all the barrenness and snow I may not see any signs of spring, but hearing this little guy singing up in my tree makes me hopeful it’s not too far away.

It’s really interesting how something so simple as a bird’s song can fill one with hope…

This isn’t the best quality video, but the sound is exactly what I was hearing while I took these photos.

And this is the sound I’ve been hearing coming from my bush all winter.  Minus the trickling water of course.

I love little birds.  ♥

  1. So we both are having birdies sing to us. Those pictures at least capture the bird. It looks so pretty the red against the white snow. Here is looking forwards to spring~ Yes? 🙂

    • Indeed we are. I haven’t heard too many birds singing just yet though, it’s still winter here for the most part. Although, while I was outside shoveling last week I heard some lovely song sparrows out there singing away, I was surprised to hear them after such a heavy snow. Their little voices were such a cheerful sound. Thank you, I love the bright red contrast too. And yes, I am very much looking forward to spring, that’s an understatement!

  2. What a wonderful blog, Julie. For me, the photos represent hope in the bleakness, and the singing/chirping cardinals made my heart flutter! Thank you for thinking to share your joys.

    • Thank you so much Yaz, I’m really glad you enjoyed it. Yes, that is exactly what the photos speak to me as well. I was going to go on more with the poem at the beginning, but found that I already said it all. 🙂 I’m so glad your heart fluttered at the sounds of the singing/chirping cardinals, they do that for me as well. They really do have a unique voice, I love listening to them. I also love and am sincerely in awe of the variety in all of nature, it brings me much joy. And I thank you for sharing in it with me.

  3. Brilliant photos of the cardinals–we have them here in Ontario and they just make the landscape look so joyful and alive (and believe me, we need it here!).

    • Thanks so much, I’m glad you like them. I wish I could have gotten in just a bit closer for those shots, but alas my camera is not the greatest. I agree they really do help liven up the wintry landscape with their beautiful bright color. Are the cardinals singing up there in Ontario yet? I haven’t heard too much more out of them here since this post.
