Trick or Treat?

Treat please!

DSCF0595 (2)

We made these adorable little candy corn themed cupcakes the other day and I thought I’d share one with you.  Best to have only this virtual one though, because they’re made with everything that is totally unhealthy.  Although… I did use organic free range eggs.  😉

Have a safe and happy Halloween!

A Place to Rest

Having been battered and scattered, blown about on gusty winds

tis a relief to finally lay to rest upon calming and gentle waters.

© Julie Rehnelt 2014

It’s so interesting to realize the fluctuations that can occur in one’s perspective as life’s various circumstances come about.  I snapped this photo during a lovely moment by the lake while out enjoying some of the beautiful autumn colors, and when I first uploaded it to my computer my thoughts looking at it were quite fanciful… imagining the leaves flying joyful and free on the wind, experiencing the exhilaration as they’re released from their tree’s branches to fly off to see new and wondrous things, before landing in cool refreshing waters and continuing their journey floating happily onto new adventures.

But in looking at it this morning after being smacked in the face last night by some very hurtful words, which resulted in an overwhelming wave of emotions from old wounds reopening, I find myself seeing it quite differently.  One of the leaves being thrashed about in the wind, beaten and battered, rather than flying joyful and free.  I very much prefer the other scenario, don’t you?

But at least the ending is still good… finding calm, gentle waters to land in.  I could have wrote that they drowned afterward, some of the leaves in the photo are sunken.  😉

To be completely honest, I’m not quite there just yet ~ upon the calm, gentle waters.  But I know I will be as I work through it, I’m quite a champ at self pep-talks.  And besides… I’ve got some fun, festive things going on here over the next couple of days that are sure to help lift my spirits too.  I probably shouldn’t even have mentioned any of this stuff.  Oh well, too late now, I’m committed.  Clicking Publish

A Visit to the Pumpkin Patch

One might assume with how much I love autumn, that surely I’ve been to a pumpkin patch before, but this year was actually my very first time visiting one.  In year’s past, we either grew our own pumpkins, such as the likes of this monstrous sized one…

Junior pumpkins 2

My beloved Junior ~ the best dog there ever was  ❤

Or we just picked them up at random roadside stands or at a local market.

But now, without a garden large enough to grow our own, and with living in the midst of a busy city, we were wanting more of that country type of feeling added to our pumpkin selecting experience.  So after looking online for nearby pumpkin farms, we took a short drive to Waldoch Farm.

In going there on a weekday, we pretty much had the whole place to ourselves.  We saw a school bus in the parking lot when we pulled in and expected the pumpkin patch to be overrun by children, but they were in a different area of the farm during the time we were there.  Even though I enjoyed the more private setting with just my daughter and I out there amongst the pumpkins, I was sort of hoping there would be some children frolicking around.   I miss children.  I miss being around their wonderful energy and curiosity.  After eleven years of working at a school with them, I’ve felt a bit deprived in the four years since.  I would love to eventually get back to working with children in some sort of capacity in the future.

In the meantime, I’ll settle for enjoying my own (not-so-much-one-anymore) child.  Here she is picking out a pumpkin…

And here’s the one I picked…

We’re super excited to carve them tomorrow!  😀

And here’s just a random pumpkin I snapped a photo of…

Aren’t pumpkins just the happiest looking things?  🙂

We also picked up a couple of other pumpkins, along with a few gourds to set out in front of the house…

This warty yellow one is our favorite…

My mom came along with us to the pumpkin patch too.  She didn’t go trudging through the fields to pick out pumpkins with us, but I snapped a photo of her waiting in the car.  Even though you can’t see her in the backseat with the tinted glass.  😉

It was my mom’s as well as my daughter’s first time to a pumpkin patch too and the three of us had a really fun first-time experience.  Maybe this will become a new tradition for us in the years to come.  It’s never too late to start a tradition is it?  😉

How about you?  Have you ever been to a pumpkin farm to pick your own pumpkins…?

Autumn Joy

Brilliant colors

Fresh crisp air

Sunny blue skies

A walk in the woods

The scent of dried leaves

and the sound of them crunching beneath my feet

Wearing soft flannel

Spiced pumpkin chai tea

And did I mention the brilliant colors?  😉

This is autumn joy!

I really hope you don’t tire of all my autumn ramblings, because I honestly can’t help myself!

May your day be filled with joy, and with…

All Aglow

Reaching out from beneath the shadows

I long to feel the warmth of your light

My colors come alive at the heat of your touch

all aglow in the radiance of your gaze.

Bridge the Gap

If only there were a bridge long enough to span the distance between us…

I would cross over it in an instant.

Whisk Me Away

Come whisk me away, my beloved

to a place where the skies are always blue

where we can lie entwined beneath autumn’s beautiful boughs

and gaze up at gossamer clouds drifting by.

May you be whisked away to somewhere beautiful today!  🙂

Autumn Blossoms

With all of the attention the colorful autumn leaves are getting, I thought I’d post a few of the lovely blossoming things I’ve been seeing as I’ve been out and about lately…

This first one I actually snapped a couple of weeks ago, the blooms on this Sedum are now a lovely rich, dark red color, sorry I don’t have a photo.  The bees have been so busy trying to gather as much nectar and pollen as possible, so you’ll notice them on a few of the other photos too…

I don’t know what these white flowers are, I came across them growing along a parkway as I was driving one day.  But gosh they’re pretty!  I thought it was unusual to see white blooms this time of year.  I took a couple photos of them…

And of course, the color of this next one blends right in with all of the autumn colored leaves…

Some gorgeous hydrangea, I love the rosy shades they turn in fall!  I have to share a few of these…

Bright, cheerful things here, and the little bee in the center adds just the right touch…

These are sadly fading, missing a few petals, but the bees look to be still enjoying them…

More white blooms.  I came across these on one of my bike rides along the river, I don’t know what they are either…

But seeing the white star shaped clusters on this makes me wonder…  a foreshadowing of what is soon to come perhaps?

❅  Snow

No, no, shh… I’m not ready for the white stuff just yet.  Not until at least Thanksgiving.  😉

Peace and Love 1

“When a true lover appears

calamities blaze up.

I like a heart that can stir the seven seas

fearlessly withstanding the waves.

I like a lover with a fiery heart

burning even hell to ashes.

I like a heart that can wrap the universe

around its hand, catching the eternal light

hanging it like an icicle.

I like a lover with a heart as large as the world

who fights like a lion, not only with others

but with himself, a lover who shatters

the veils of all hearts with the blazing light of Truth.”

~ Rumi

And I also like a tree with fiery leaves in autumn that blazes my eyes with its beauty!  ❤

Don’t you?!   😀

Golden Dreams

Golden dreams

near water serene

with sunlit leaves

on ancient trees

bending low

their reflections show

as harmony flows

in autumn’s glow.

I snapped this yesterday when I went down by the river to sit alone for a little while.  This is the same tree from the photo I used in “Almost Touching” but taken from a different viewpoint, and of course… now wearing its beautiful, golden autumn colors.    Hope you like it!  🙂
