Cool refreshing waters flow
traversing land formed long ago
A thunderous sound roaring wild and free
nothing can contain its jamboree
As it rushes over the steep rock wall
I attempt to capture a waterfall

My sister snapped the above photo of me as I was attempting to ‘capture’ the Upper Gooseberry Falls during a trip up to Lake Superior for my birthday last month. I didn’t realize that she was including me in her photograph, I thought she was standing beside me taking a picture of the falls too, but it’s cool to see the perspective she captured with me off to the side like that.
Here’s what my perspective looked like. Although I can’t really tell from the photo above which way I was holding my camera at the time, I know it was one of these two shots that I was taking, because the people are in the same positions as the one my sister took…
Speaking of people – there were tons of people all over the place while we were there, so it was hard to get a photo without people in it. They were especially noticeable when I zoomed in…
I also had a hard time getting a shot of the Middle Falls without there being people in it…
But I mostly had a hard time taking this one because I had to climb over to a very precarious spot on the edge of the cliff to capture it at this angle – and I was in flip flops, which are not exactly the safest shoes for rock climbing. 😉
Here is a shot I snapped of the middle falls once we ‘climbed’ down below…
Finally one without any people.
Well, except for this strange lady who was creeping behind me…
My seester ❤
Who was once again taking pictures of me taking pictures. But this time I was taking one of her too. She’s not the only one who can be sneaky!
😉
Gooseberry Falls State Park is a beautiful place and I had a wonderful time there capturing waterfalls with my sister.
Hope you capture something beautiful today…

I really like your poem. And these are great photos — thanks for risking life and limb. It is no wonder there are so many people there; it looks like a really beautiful place.

Thanks Debra, I’m so glad you liked! Haha yes, nothing like risking life and limb to get the shot. 😉 It truly is a beautiful place, so I really can’t blame all the people for wanting to be there too. 🙂

You really captured the movement of the falls 🙂 It looks a lovely place to go – but like you say, it would be nicer with no people; but I suppose everyone was thinking the same! 🙂

Thanks! Yeah, it would have been nicer without all of the other people there, but I can’t blame them for wanting me be in such a wonderful place. And to them… my sister and I were the “other people” 😉

Gorgeous photos and waterfalls. I would love to visit, even with too many people and sneaky family! Thanks for the fun tour Julie! 🙂

Thanks so much Brad! It really is lovely place, despite the crowds. It’s definitely a must see for anyone traveling to Minnesota. It’s only about 3 hours away from where I live, and I’m hoping to get up there again when the fall colors are blazing. 🙂

Sounds wonderful. I look forward to more photos and fun musings! I’d like to get back east one of these years for fall colors. They’re decent in AR, but not as varied or vivid as back east.

You know, my favorite photo here is the one of your sister because I can just picture the two of you spending the afternoon climbing around the waterfall and surrounding areas to get some photos, and the wonderful time you must have had 🙂

Thanks Simon, we definitely had a wonderful time, and we did take lots of pictures, but as for the climbing around… after my ‘death defying’ adventure on the edge of the cliff in my flip flops, we decided it was better to keep to the trails and pathways. 😉

Your sister has taken a great shot of you and the falls Jewels, I like it better than the ones of the falls without you, it adds true character to your poem, capturing the ambiance of the moment and all that the waterfall has to offer. You may have seen MyBeautifulSeriesBlog this week, as it features Australian waterfalls and I share a similar sense of awe more on the life refreshing aspect. Thanks for sharing:-)

Thanks so much, I really like that one too. 🙂
I haven’t seen that blog post you mentioned, I’ll have to go over and have a look at it. Waterfalls truly are so refreshing and alive aren’t they? I love the sound too, and the movement, so powerful…

I love waterfalls! The good thing about people in your shots is that they give scale so we can see just how big those falls really are!

Oh that’s true, the people really do give it more scale – those falls are huge!

Great pictures of a beautiful place. Looks like you both had fun taking pictures of each other without the other one realizing it.

Somehow I missed this post before. Lovely photos! Gooseberry Falls looks like a beautiful place and I like the way you and your sister captured photos of each other taking photos. But, please, no more rock climbing in flip-flops! 🙂

Thanks! Yeah, Gooseberry Falls is a rally beautiful place, and I hear the leaves are really starting to do their thing up there now, so I may have to try and arrange a time to go back soon. But don’t worry… I’ll wear better shoes haha! 🙂
