The Rose

“Some say love it is a river
That drowns the tender reed
Some say love it is a razor
That leaves your soul to bleed

Some say love it is a hunger
An endless aching need
I say love it is a flower
And you it’s only seed

It’s the heart afraid of breaking
That never learns to dance
It’s the dream afraid of waking
That never takes the chance

It’s the one who won’t be taken
Who cannot seem to give
And the soul afraid of dyin’
That never learns to live

When the night has been too lonely
And the road has been too long
And you think that love is only
For the lucky and the strong

Just remember in the winter
Far beneath the bitter snows
Lies the seed that with the sun’s love
In the spring becomes the rose.”

The Rose  Amanda McBroom

Used to get requests to sing this, when I was in a band. It never failed to bring out the Bette in everyone! 😉

    • It is a lovely rose, my sister gave them to me ❤
I hadn't heard it in a while either and then came across a video of someone singing it for a competition and lyrics just really grabbed me.

  9. This is beautiful Julie. I haven’t been about much but how strange that you should post this and I’m just releasing an album of covers with this song on it!! I recorded it back in 2000 when I was still well enough to play. It was a good version first sung and made famous by Bette. The song is written by Amanda McBroom. I had to find out the songwriters for the royalties – as when singing someone else’s song you have to pay publisher and songwriter. It’s been simpler before when doing my own work! Sending you lots of love and hope things are going as well as possible with you as you’ve been a big quiet too. We had a sprinkling of snow yesterday – your temperature is ferocious! Stay wrapped up. Love Ruth xxxxxx

    • Hi Ruth! ❤ Thanks! 🙂
I would love to hear your cover of this song, I bet you sang it beautifully! I should probably edit this and add Amanda McBroom's name.
It's so good to hear from you, I think of you often, always hoping you're getting on alright.xx I've been having a bit of a rough time emotionally lately and haven't felt very inspired to share as much, but I've also been really busy – my daughter is expecting a baby in a few weeks so there's lots going on around here. She's had a difficult time of it too, which has been stressful for all of us. She's having a little girl, Noelle, and I'm beyond excited to have a granddaughter, but I'm a bit nervous too for how much our lives are about to change. Such is life – full of changes. But full of blessings too! Yes, these temps are ferocious, but I am enjoying the beauty of it as well, having lovely frost on my windows to look at. Hope you're keeping warm there with your sprinkling of snow. Much, much love to you Ruth, take care my friend. xx ❤
