You Make Me Blush

At your touch

I feel the heat rise to my face

my cheeks turn pink

and my heart begins to race.

Hot flashes, you make me blush.

Oh, sorry… were you expecting I was referring to something else?  I wish I was. 😉

Yeah, so here I am, just going along my merry way, when all of a sudden BAM… I’m having hot flashes.  Noooo, I’m way too young for this!  Well, technically speaking, I suppose I’m right about at the age where this begins to happen – I’ll be 50 this summer.  But because I’m so young at heart, it just doesn’t seem right, I’m not ready to go through this yet.

But ready or not, here it comes… another hot flash.  😉

It does help explain a lot though in regard to the emotional fluctuations I’ve been experiencing lately – damn hormones are really throwing me off balance.  I’m up… then I’m down, I’m laughing… then I’m crying, I’m happy… then I’m sad.  Please bear with me, as my posts are likely to reflect a bit of that, hopefully you don’t get whiplash from all of the back and forth (e)motion.

Good thing gardening season is just around the corner.  My therapy.  And as you can see from the photo, I’ve got a lovely head start on that in buying myself some pretty, pink Gerbera daisies to plant once the weather warms up a bit more.  Until then I’ll enjoy having them indoors, ‘blushing’ right along with me.

I’ve also got a spot reserved for a free online cooking workshop this weekend called “How to Use Food to Rebalance Your Hormones.”  I already eat healthy, but now with the Big M looming on the horizon, I’m looking for some natural ways to help balance my hormones and ease this process.  I’m a huge believer in “Let food be thy medicine, and medicine be thy food,” so maybe this will be a help.  I hope so, because although I don’t mind blushing for a good reason, having these hot flashes isn’t any fun.

But either way, if I learn any fun, new, yummy recipes I’ll be sure to share them.

May your day be filled with fun and yummy things, and with…

  4. PS The Big M will change you forever. For the better. I promise. You are entering a Passage which when over, will have reformed you. (((HUGS))) amy

    • I know it will certainly change me forever, I hope you’re correct in saying “for the better.” Thanks so much for the encouragement, my friend! ❤

      • The Passage at times is miserable. I am being honest with you. If you adapt an attitude that this is a very special time in your Life, and you will be better when you get through it, you’ll make it just fine. The night sweats at first were horrendous for me, so I kept a fan running all night, which helped immensely. Hang in there! (((HUGS))) Amy

  5. Darn Julie. I was hoping you and your flowers were up to mischief! I’m glad you seem to be embracing and making fun of your changes. Gardening, cooking and laughter help! Will your class include wild edibles? I’ve been having fun finding treats to eat in my yard! 🙂

    • Yes, mischief sounds like much more fun! 😉
I’m not exactly ’embracing’ it just yet, but seeing as it appears to be an inevitable journey I’m destined to take, I may as well try and make the best of it. Gardening, cooking and laughter will help! 🙂
I don’t know if the workshop will include anything with wild edibles, but I did see dandelions in one of the recipes, so that counts! It’s fun that you’ve been finding treats to eat in your yard! I think the whole wild edibles topic is so cool. It’s especially handy to know that stuff if there’s ever a zombie apocalypse. No, but seriously. 😀

      • Hopefully no zombies in our future, but learning wild edibles is fun. The color of dandelions is so vibrant! I bet it will an interesting recipe. Maybe you’ll share.

      • Yes, hopefully not. It is fun, several years ago I was quite into learning about the wild medicinal plants that grow here in Minnesota, but have since gotten away from it. I agree, the color of dandelions is so vibrant! I know they’re usually considered an undesirable weed in lawns, but I find them delightful! Back when I lived on some land with acreage, we had gazillions of them and made dandelion wine with them one year. It was yucky, it was way too sweet tasting and the yellow color reminded me of urine. Haha! I’ll definitely share any interesting recipes (dandelion or otherwise) that I learn at the workshop this weekend. 🙂

  6. Yes, reverse puberty. Longer than original puberty it seems.
Love the flowers. I’m so eager to plant things!

    • Ugh, ‘reverse puberty’ sounds dreadful Joey, I don’t like it put that way at all… especially since I feel I’m at my sexual peak haha!
I love the flowers and am eager to plant things too, it won’t be long now… 🙂

  7. I’ve been riding a similar emotional roller coaster and I suspect mine also might be hormone related. Yesterday, I asked someone how it was possible to be so happy and so sad at the same time. It’s really crazy what hormones can do to us! I hope your weather warms up so you can get out there for some gardening therapy. Take care and stay cool, my friend. 🙂

    • I’ve asked that too – I feel like a walking talking contradiction of myself lately! Hormones play such an important role in our overall health and well-being, for men too, it’s not just the usually talked about hormones that affect us and how our bodies operate. But of course my focus is mostly on the ones that are going out of whack at present. I’m really not looking forward to this and I hope I can get through it with as much grace as possible. Our weather here has been rainy, but the temps are supposed to be reasonably mild. I’m so eager to get out in my garden. Thanks Trisha, I’ll stay as cool as I can, even if I have to carry around something to fan myself with. 😉 You take care on that roller coaster of yours, hang on tight! ❤

  8. Julie, you know what I like about you? You might be turning 50, but you still act like you’re 15 🙂

    • Haha thanks, Simon! I think. I’m not so sure 15 is what I’d want to go for, maybe 25. 😉 Back when she was in 4th grade, Emma Beyers used to tell me that I was just a kid in a grown up’s suit, I guess she had me pegged way back then! 😀

  11. Jewels, while you can modify the effects of the hormone changes with diet, and therapies, the most important help is having your hubby onside so he is aware of the changes. This has been an area I have counselled many men in, as often they do not understand what is happening in the mood changes with their wives, or how to help and support them, and validate their experiences for them. Men are being practical and simple in their understanding of life may not have as much of the right brain action for appreciating beyond what they see and hear their wives saying and doing, and so need to be reminded and helped so they can be more supportive.

    • Thank you, but I’m not married. I was for 22 years, but that ended back in 2011 when he left me for another, so I’m on my own in that regard. But I do live with both my daughter and my mom right now and have support from them. 🙂

  12. Sorry to hear that Jewels my current wife and i have been through that sadness also and know the pain, and we are assisting a friend at my work through a similar situation at present. I can not understand how a man could leave such a beautiful woman and person as yourself, it defies understanding! Not to mention the effect it has on children and families. My wife and I both believe God ‘keeps the best till last” and we live in the joy of that, I will pray that this is your joy also!
