“Embrace sorrowful thoughts
for they sweep the house of your heart clean,
scatter the withered leaves, and pull out the twisted roots,
preparing the ground for the new shoots of joy.”

“Embrace sorrowful thoughts.” Now that’s not a sentence you hear very often, but I like the sentiment of using sorrow as a cleansing experience for your heart. Thanks for giving me something to think about on this Wednesday morning, Julie 🙂

No, it’s not something you hear very often, and it’s not easy to do, but I too like the idea of allowing sorrow to help cleanse the heart. And of course… I look forward to “the new shoots of joy.” 🙂

I think I experienced what Rumi describes here. The new shoots of joy are surprising after feeling such deep sorrow but the joy feels deeper than it did before the cleansing of sorrow. I hope you experience the joy soon, Jewels.

I think I’ve experienced it in the past too, and I know what you mean about the joy feeling deeper. Thanks so much Trisha. ❤

This speaks right to where I am right now. I’ve been resisting sorrowful thoughts, but I know they can’t be ignored. Maybe I’m afraid I’ll fall apart? Perhaps that what I really need to do to rise up again. Good share, thanks Julie! ❤

It’s such a natural reaction to want to resist sorrow, isn’t it? It can be a scary thing to allow and embrace our sorrowful thoughts in the fear that we might fall apart, but I really think Rumi is onto something here – a heart cleansing can take place in it too. And after… the new shoots of joy are oh so sweet. Sending hugs to you, Eliza. ❤

Such a lovely quote Julie! When we embrace them we open ourselves to healing. Its not easy, but has turned my life around and allowed me to help others who can get stuck in the lows of life.
I’d be careful if that’s yellow loosestrife though … it will take over the garden 😉

It really is a good one, Val! I feel I may have done it a slight injustice by not sharing the piece in its entirety though, because the whole thing is filled with lots of good stuff. If you’ll allow me…
“The body is a guest house
each morning someone new arrives.
Welcome them all for they may be messengers from the invisible.
Do not feel burdened by them
or they may go back to non-existence.
Each time a thought enters your heart
treat it as an honored guest,
your worth is shown by the thoughts you entertain.
Embrace sorrowful thoughts
for they sweep the house of your heart clean,
scatter the withered leaves, and pull out the twisted roots,
preparing the ground for the new shoots of joy.
What sorrow takes away from the heart
it replaces with something better.
Without the fury of thunder and lightening
the plants will be scorched by the sun.
Be grateful for all you receive,
good and bad alike,
for it may be a gift from the treasury of Spirit
that will bring the fulfillment of your most secret desire.”
And like you said “When we embrace them we open ourselves to healing.” It’s so true. You and Rumi are so wise. ❤
Oh yes, I know all about that invasive yellow loosestrife. It's hard not to love it though with its bright yellow "shoots of joy." 😉

I know it well Julie 🙂 So powerful and real. Its one of those pieces that shifts everything in a moment. What we thought is “bad” becomes something to embrace.
My wisdom comes from peeps like Rumi … and I guess, years dealing with the highs and lows of life.
Thank you for sharing all of its magic here!
