Julie, Julie, Tell Me Truly, How Does Your Garden Grow?

With yellow bells

and pea pod shells

and tiny beans all in a row.

I’m just realizing that I haven’t posted anything about my vegetable garden yet this summer.  There’s been tons of stuff going on out there and I’m so thankful for how nicely everything is growing.  Well, I’ve had a few setbacks along the way, but for the most part, everything is flourishing.

Peas allow me to share a few of the highlights so far.  For instance, my peas

I adore fresh raw peas straight out of the garden and never cook the ones I grow myself, I just pop them open and then pop them into my mouth, they’re so sweet and delicious!  🙂

They’re at the end of their peak now and I’m sad to see them go.  Here are a couple other photos I snapped of my peas as they were growing.  I only have a small amount of sunny space for planting, but I wanted more peas, so I planted them in two different areas this year.  Along the back side of the fence…

And along the side of the house…

Oops hi Mom!  🙂

I found that the peas grew way better in the area along the back of the fence.  But even though it’s technically our property, it’s basically in the neighbors yard, so I don’t really feel comfortable puttering around over there.  It’s a rental property though and the tenants are rarely outside, so it’s been fine.  There is also a nice strip of sun back there behind our garage and I’ve entertained the thought of growing corn back there, but I’m not sure I feel completely comfortable doing that.  I’ll have to ponder it some more…

Another crop that is sadly nearing its end is my lettuce.  I can’t even say how much I’ve been enjoying eating fresh salads each day, and I will miss going out there and picking my lunch every day…

But there are other things ready for the picking out there.  I just picked my first zucchini yesterday!  I don’t have a photo of it, but I have this one of when it was first developing…

Since I snapped this, there are 4 or 5 others that will be coming ready soon.  Yay, I love zucchini!

A few other things that will be coming ready soon are my beans…

And my peppers.  My yellow bells…

And my jalapenos…

I’ve also got tiny cucumbers developing…

And tomatoes…

A few of these are starting to change color now. They’re a yellow cherry variety of tomato and I can’t wait to try them.

Oh, I almost forgot about my strawberries.  They’re one of the setbacks I mentioned.  The fruits have been really sub-par, much too tart and also misshaped, but the blooms are pretty…

Strawberry blossoms are such delightful little things, so even though I’m not getting any sweet strawberries to eat, I am fully enjoying their sweet looks.  😉

There are other sweet looking blooms in the flower bed and in miscellaneous pots on the patio too, but I’ll save them for another time.  Thanks for letting me share about some of the things growing in my vegetable garden.  Growing my own food truly is so rewarding, and tending to the little growing things nurtures my own soul at the same time.

I’m about to head out there right now for some more nurturing.  I hope you’re enjoying your weekend, may it be filled some nurturing too!

  1. What beautiful plants Julie. Your love and care are reflected in the photos and plant health. I don’t seem to be enjoying my garden this year with too much rain and too little TLC.

    • Thanks so much Brad. Sorry to hear that the rain has been raining on your garden parade a bit too much this year. The weather is always a huge factor for how well our gardens grow, isn’t it? I guess even with as weird as ours has been here, it’s mostly agreeing with mine.
Has the rain let up there now for the most part? I hope so.
I also hope you have a wonderful weekend. I’m looking forward to reading your Awesome Stories for this week a bit later. 🙂

      • Yes, weather plays a big part, and I haven’t put as much time or effort into my garden. I can see how more planning, space and TLC would help. We finally have sunshine today after a week of rain. 🙂

  7. Reciprocal nurturing – I love that! Your baby veggies are so cute and they look so healthy. I’ve been loving the edible pod peas from our CSA farm. We go out and pick as many as we want, where I pop a lot in my mouth as I go along picking – fresh food is delish! ❤

    • Thanks Eliza, it’s a wonderful thing how in giving nurture, one can receive nurture in return. I’m so thankful for how well my garden is doing this year, but I can’t take too much credit for its good health – nature has a way of caring for itself. How nice that you have a CSA nearby to get fresh produce from, and I totally agree – fresh food is delish! ❤

    • Thanks Neha, me too! How nice that must have been – zucchini bread is so yummy! One great thing about growing zucchini is that it usually produces a plentiful crop so you end up with tons – way more than you can possibly eat, so you have lots to share. And lots to bake zucchini bread with! 😉
My Sunday was nice, thanks so much, we had a community event going on in my neighborhood so it was very festive around here. Hope you had a happy Sunday too my beautiful friend! ❤

    • Thanks so much Krys, I’m so glad you enjoyed seeing them! I was surprised to realize I hadn’t shared a post about my veggie garden yet this summer since earlier in the spring I was going on and on about how much I was looking forward to it. I would love to see your cold, wet, Scottish garden. Other garden photos you’ve shared have been lovely. And I’m sure I’ve already mentioned how much I long to see Scotland in person – along with England and Ireland too. Someday…
I just love the peas too, there’s something so sweet about them – I mean besides their flavor. 😉
Thanks again Krys, hope all is well there and that your week is off to a wonderful start. xx

    • It really is so rewarding growing ones own food and I’m so pleased with how well everything is doing in my garden. After being an avid gardener for 20+ years I really missed it too when I first moved back to the city and I’m so thankful to once again have a small space for growing things. 🙂
